CHARACTER INTERVIEW WITH BIG RED,THE MULE

Carly's View welcomes an unusual guest today. Meet Big Red, a mule from Sally Brandle's latest book, The Hitman's Mistake. Big Red bonded with the heroine, Miranda Whitley, and then saved her butt several times. He expresses his feelings by nuzzles, avoidance maneuvers, and braying.

What allowed you to trust Miranda?
Past caregivers of mine included a weekend hunter, a poacher, and the owners of the Lazy K dude ranch. I sensed Miranda’s anxiety and offered her a chance to ride a mount who understood angst. I may not be the handsomest or fastest equine, but my hooves have traveled challenging paths. Little did I know the danger we’d be facing in The Hitman’s Mistake.

Readers consider you a hero. Do you enjoy that role?
Not especially. I’d rather be known for my loyalty to humans who treat me with dignity and respect. For them, I’d do anything. But I’ve been ‘saddled’ with a variety of riders, many who thought of me as a tool, like a freakin’ bicycle. In Torn by Vengeance I assist Corrin Patten, the heroine, during a rescue scene. She’s afraid of horses, but her instincts tell her she needs to hop on and ride. The scar on my neck is a constant reminder of how greed and power influence people. When my story, The Romantic Mule Thriller, gets written, readers will learn why I avoid gunshots.

What’s your current role?
I make a cameo appearance in The Targeted Pawn, releasing in March. While investigating an attack on the heroine, Elon Hardy, a game warden in Montana borrows me as her mount. Belle’s association with me began in The Romantic Mule Thriller and she’s one of my favorite people. Through her I found my forever home. That’s all I ever wanted, a herd to belong to and humans who realize my worth. Talk to me quietly, ask me to do something, praise me when I respond, and I’ll take care of you. Oh, and treats are always welcome. Speak softly and carry a bag of carrots!

Thanks for joining us today Big Red!
